At Spick ‘N’ Span Services we get asked questions every day about our services, and as happy as we are to answer them, we thought wouldn’t it be nice to put these answers somewhere where everyone can access them? So for the next few weeks, our blog will address these FAQ’s and hopefully answer any burning questions our customers may have! If you have any questions you would like to ask you can message us on Facebook with all your suggestions!

So here goes, question number 3 is:

‘Why do I need professional carpet cleaning, cant I do it myself?’

With so many life hacks and so-called DIY miracle solutions, it’s easy to see why so many people try at home solutions before calling a professional. You may think a DIY attempt at carpet cleaning will save you money, but it may actually end up costing you more in the long run.

Some of these DIY tips can actually damage the fibres in some carpets, as not all carpets are the same. Carpets made with wool can be eaten away by some chemicals, as the wool is a protein. Some manmade fibres such as viscose can be damaged by being over wet during cleaning. Damage to carpets and upholstery, caused by home remedy cleaning can very often be completely unfixable, with the only solution being to buy new.

If you do have a spillage that needs an urgent clean, most carpet cleaning companies are happy to offer advice on how to limit the damage until it can be professionally cleaned. As a general rule of thumb, it is a good idea to dab all liquid stains with a dry, clean, cloth to remove excess moisture. Don’t apply any cleaner not specifically made for carpets in any situation. If you intend to get the carpet professionally cleaned, don’t apply any form of cleaning product, including carpet cleaning products, as these will cause a lot of foam when cleaned professionally, and this will take longer to rectify than the original stain.

I am an avid Pinterest user, a believer in cleaning hacks and DIY money savers, I am an easy sell on ‘miracle’ cleaning products, but the one main thing I have learnt in my time at Spick ‘N’ Span is that sometimes it’s not as easy as it looks, sometimes there is a good reason why someone is a ‘professional’ and it’s ALWAYS best to leave it to them to get the job done right.
